The dangers of winter climbing

Three climbers lost their lifes on Scotland’s mountains over the winter period as the message that the wilderness can be a dangerous place is reinforced.

These were experienced ice climbers – not the ill-equipped summer strollers who regularly get lost over the summers – yet they still fell foul of the dreadful weather conditions which have hit the country over recent weeks.

The three climbers, two of which were killed on Ben Nevis and one on Liathach in Wester Ross, were caught in fierce avalanches.
